Cleaning My Mac

I am trying to replace my computing devices (an iMac, a couple of MacBook Pros and a couple of Wintel laptops). Since this is the first time I will be giving my Mac devices to someone else – I really want to know:

  1. How to properly backup copy profiles / data from the old machines to the new
  2. How to completely clean the old hardware of all personal stuff

I am sure there will be some learning in this process, so this is where I will be documenting all that I learn.

Laptop vs Tablet

I have been doing my best to incorporate a “tablet” into my workflow but am still coming out short on a few tasks. Namely:

  • Managing & Arranging my flickr pix
  • Blogging (either WordPress of Blogspot), specially when I am trying to create links
  • Remotely accessing servers via ssh

The ssh access would be very useful but at the same time is NOT the top of my priority.

Other than trying to come up with an excuse so that I can get a new toy / gadget (the tablet is a great gadget), I am really trying to find a way to NOT have to use my phone. I realized a while back that I use the phone for almost everything else more than I use it as a phone (to make or receive actual phone calls). And I do it because I am NOT in front of my laptop. The tablet would be the perfect solution – it’s way more convenient to have around than a laptop while at the same time it has a much bigger screen size than my iPhone.

The only drawback of a tablet – cannot make regular calls 😦 Yes, there are solutions, but none that actually replaces having my phone. If I am going to have to give up on that front, the tablet needs to be significantly more functional that a smart phone. The larger screen size if definitely a good starting point, but not enough.

So, my solution is to get a smaller / lighter laptop. My current laptop, 13″ MacBook Pro, is less than an inch thick, under 13″ x 9″ and weighs less than 5lbs. I newer version would make the laptop about a pound and a half lighter. But would mean forking out $1,500 😦

Netflix Adds Multiple Profile on the Same Account

Aug 20th – Been meaning to update my previous entry for over a week now (yes, almost since I originally posted it, I know). Seems Netflix started supporting AppleTV almost right away.

Still waiting to see being able to restrict access to a profile.

Aug 10th – This is really awesome, now we can keep our viewing history separate – but is that really what is needed? The main feature that I would be interested in would be to restrict access to a Profile from another. If any user can switch to a diff profile, than this whole feature is basically broken.

Don’t get me wrong, the new feature is definitely an improvement over nothing at all. But I feel like it’s a tease of a feature

My family, mostly our kids, uses Netflix primarily on the TV via AppleTV. Which unfortunately doesn’t yet support this new feature. Which is understandable, it’s a new feature that is still being rolled out. But practically for me, without the AppleTV support this is pretty much a useless feature. At most it’s a nice concept that I am looking forward to.

MySQL Replication

Setting MySQL Master

  1. Modify my.cnf (usually located in /etc/mysql/my.cnf)
    1. Update bind-address entry from 127.0.0.1 to the regular IP
      • bind-address = 127.0.0.1
      • bind-address = 123.234.12.13
    2. Set server-id to 1
    3. Uncomment the line with log_bin
    4. Designate the database to be replicated on to the slave server
      • binlog_do_db = db_to_replicate
    5. Save my.cnf and restart mysql
  2. Grant privileges to the slave (mysql command line)
    • GRANT REPLICATION SLAVE ON *.* to ‘slave_user’@’%’ IDENTIFIED BY ‘password’;
    • FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
  3. ss

Setting MySQL Slave

  1. Modify my.cnf
    1. Set server-id to 2
    2. relay-log = /var/log/mysql/mysql-relate-bin.log (need to be added manually)
    3. log_bin = /var/log/mysql/mysql-bin.log
    4. binlog_do_db = <newdatabase>
  2. Set pw
