Throwing a Baseball at Near LightSpeed

I don’t really recall which program it was on but I was listening to NPR / KUT and heard this little piece of “What If”.

The explanation included how the air in front of the ball would not be able to move around the ball as it usually does, since it was moving soooooo fast. So, instead there would be a vacuum created right behind the ball as it was moving and there would be a constant fusion in front of it.

As I was listening the one question that was going thru my mind – wait a second, why / how would the ball itself remain together? Are we assuming the whole ball is acting like a single “thing”?

Needless to say, I eventually google’d and did find some related / relevant articles but not exactly the program 😦

CarTalk Coming to an End

Without really realizing I have been listening less and less CarTalk for some time now. Maybe my driving habits have changed or maybe my girls have more or less taken over my radio controls, in any case I definitely don’t listen to CarTalk nearly as much as I used to.

As little as I did listen, it was comforting to know that it was there. But it all came to an end the other day when I heard that this Saturday is their last show to be broadcast on NPR / KUT.

Men and Friendship

Heard the radio program as I was heading to work after dropping my daughter. Off the bat I had a few questions:

  • Is this phenomenon unique to America / Western World
  • Is this a new development. I.e, was this not a issue 10 / 50 / 100 years ago?
  • Is the assumption that the friendship has to be between men?

Sunday, May 21st, 2017

I was driving and “This American Life” happened to be on. The very first act was asking the question – Are We alone? Act II – Couple Therapy. And finally, Act III – Answering a 9 year olds questions to her dad.

First off – disclaimer – I am writing this even before I’ve heard the end of Act III. I actually pulled over to the first place I could think of that would have WiFi and pulled out my laptop to start this. I have a feeling this is going to take a while but only if I begin.

As Act III started the very first thing that got my attention was that the girl was asking all these questions – why this, why that? And I realized that my girls

Google Docs Security Hack

Yesterday I got an email from a friend, who I don’t usually get emails from, saying that he shared some “Google Docs” with me. Not surprisingly, many many people seem to have gotten the same, or at least similar, email.

A couple of things stood out for me:

  1. His email address
  2. I got 2 identical emails
  3. It was from someone that I have not been corresponding for a while now

By default I am fairly skeptical about any email that wants me to “do something”. We hardly use email at work, most of my ex-coworkers stay in touch via group emails. Needless to say, I was way to suspicious to actually click on the link or whatever it was that I was supposed to have clicked on and so far I have only gotten the email from that one friend of mine. Looks like most of my friends also did the right thing.

So, I don’t think I was going to write about this as it didn’t really seem like a significant issue. Just yet another attempt to get access to my online info. But this morning as I was driving to work and listening to On Point on the radio it seemed that they were doing a whole show on this. Which seemed a bit much to me. It was not that they were talking about security or privacy online but just the issue from yesterday. One of the point that really bothered me was when the question was raised that we should be more guarded about our activities online. To me that seems such an obvious thing.
